Frequently asked questions
What is hypnosis?
I like to explain hypnosis as a state of highly focused attention. When we enter that state of attention we are open to accepting suggestions that positively change the way we think, feel and act.
All hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis, and this is because entering hypnosis is always voluntary and the client is always in control of if they go into a hypnotic trance and how deeply they go.
What can hypnosis be used for?
Hypnosis can help many things from limiting beliefs, to pain to stress and anxiety and to help people break unhelpful habits.
For adults hypnosis is successfully used for:
• anxiety and stress
• pain
• irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and digestive issues
• stopping smoking and vaping
• confidence, motivation and self esteem
• fears and phobias
• menopause and hormonal issues
For children hypnosis is successfully used for:
• headaches and stomach aches
• anxiety
• learning and attention
• bed wetting
• sports performance
• sleep problems
Is hypnosis safe?
Yes, hypnosis is safe, and it is important to know that a hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything against your will.
During hypnosis, the client is always in control and can choose to come out of trance at any time. It is not possible to get stuck in a state of hypnosis.
At the end of the session, we always ensure that you’re totally out of hypnosis and fully awake and reoriented in the present moment.
Can hypnosis help kids?
Yes!
Children generally have wonderful imaginations and spend much of their time in natural trance states, particularly when engaged in imaginary play or absorbed in a game. Therefore, using positive suggestions and telling therapeutic stories work very well with children.
Hypnosis usually looks a bit different for children than it does for adults. While adults generally close their eyes during hypnosis, younger children in particular may prefer to keep their eyes open during the whole session.
Sessions with children include hypnotic games, role playing, storytelling and mindfulness activities. I work with children and their family to come up with ideas and activities that they can practice in the real world to help embed positive changes.
In both children and adults, I use hypnosis to create problem solvers who can manage the physical and emotional challenges life throws up. We work together to build up a variety of tools that are readily available whenever needed.
