Introduction
Mind Body Syndrome (MBS), also known as Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) or Psychophysiologic Disorder, is an emerging field in neuroscience that explores how our brains shape our physical and emotional experiences.
While our brains aim to keep us safe, sometimes they misinterpret signals, leading to chronic pain and discomfort.
Common Conditions
MBS can manifest in various chronic pain syndromes, including:
CHRONIC PAIN SYNDROMES
- back and neck pain
- tension headaches
- migraines
- fibromyalgia
- Interstitial cystitis (Irritable bladder syndrome)
- chronic abdominal and pelvic pain syndromes
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM RELATED DISORDERS
- irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Interstitial cystitis (Irritable bladder syndrome)
OTHER SYNDROMES
- insomnia
- chronic fatigue syndrome
- tinnitus
- dizziness
- anxiety
Triggers and risk factors
The brain’s error in creating chronic conditions can result from injuries, stressful life events, or emotional factors. Fear, anxiety, or suppressed emotions like anger may trigger and perpetuate symptoms.
Certain personality traits, such as perfectionism and people-pleasing tendencies, are associated with MBS. Childhood trauma and stressful backgrounds also correlate with an increased risk of chronic pain.
Healing
MBS is both temporary and curable. Neuroplasticity allows our brains to form new, healthier pathways with the right strategies and practices.
In the past I experienced debilitating IBS as a result of MBS, stemming from my inclination toward people-please and saying ‘yes’ when I really meant ‘no’. This led to unnecessary stress, wreaking havoc on my mind and body. My fear of the symptoms and constant vigilance over my well-being kept the issues in place. Ultimately, a combination of gut-directed hypnosis and MBS education and practices allowed me to heal.
I work with clients who have unexplained pain or pain that is not structural (such as IBS and fibromyalgia) using education and hypnosis. Firstly, we identify the triggers and risk factors contributing to these chronic conditions. We then address unconscious beliefs and patterns through mindfulness, education and hypnosis, leading to lasting positive changes in mind and body.
Conclusion
Many individuals experiencing unexplained pain or conditions without structural causes may find relief through a mind-body approach to healing. Seeking professional guidance is essential, as understanding the mind-body connection is crucial to healing.
